NCAA Basketball Season Preview: North Carolina Tar Heels (ACC)

2011 CBB Predictions & Gambling Preview: – North Carolina Tar Heels (ACC)

There isn’t a poll I have seen that doesn’t have North Carolina at the very top.  It is difficult to argue with that positioning too because even though there are some other very talented teams out there, this one is primarily relying on experienced players who have shown that they are very good at the collegiate level already.

There isn’t just one star, there is a constellation.

The only thing that worries me is that they Tar Heels aren’t as deep in the backcourt as they have been in the past.  Against teams with size, if not talent, up front they may struggle if their guards are outplayed.  There aren’t too many teams out there like that so folks in Chapel Hill shouldn’t be too worried.  There hasn’t been a preseason favourite like this in a few seasons.

Additions
PJ Hairston – if he really is a great shooter he is exactly what the team needs.
James McAdoo – on any other team he would start right away at forward.
Subtractions
None worth mentioning

Key Players
Harrison Barnes – Maybe the best player in the country.
Tyler Zeller – A true big man, rare in the college game.

Razor Ray

John Henson – Slim rebounding machine and shot blocker.

Strengths
Arguably the best frontcourt in the nation.  Most preseason All ACC teams have Barnes, Zeller and Henson on them, and the great thing about each is that they are complimentary players.  Henson has great length that he uses on the boards and to block shots; Zeller can score in a variety of ways; and Barnes is a fantastic wing player who can stuff a stat sheet.  These guys have already had a year to figure out how to play with each other and should be special this year.

Weaknesses
Hard to find a big weakness on this team with so much talent coming back.  The one thing they are missing is great 3 point shooting.  They have a couple of guys, including newcomer Hairston who are supposed to be great shooters but we will have to see if the reputations are eventually backed by the numbers.

Post Season

Anything less than the final four will be a huge disappointment.

Championship Odds 7/2

Projected wins 30+
